Relationship Needs in the Birthchart

To some extent we could say that the entire birth chart is relevant when assessing relationship needs. The simple truth is the more each individual is expressing their own authentic nature, and living in accordance with their energy pattern, the better their relationships will be. This is because they will be happier and more joyful as an individual, and they will therefore radiate a strong frequency of attraction. A suitable partner will then be highly likely to come into their field of experience, and a satisfying relationship result.

However, within the broad framework of the above, we can also focus in on some particular planets and areas of a chart that are of prime importance in assessing the relationship needs of one individual. The following list, which we shall briefly discuss in this article, gives an idea of the most important factors:

The Descendant signThe Descendant ruler(s)The 7th house and any planets within itVenus (sign, house, aspects)The Moon (sign, house, aspects)Oppositions within the chart

The Descendant sign is always the one opposite the Ascendant. It signifies what we are looking for, what completes our nature. It might also be seen as what sort of energy is furthest away from us, and therefore what we are fascinated by. The Descendant sign and the ruler's placement can therefore indicate the type of person we may be attracted to.

Similar ideas follow for the 7th house, the house that follows the Descendant sign. Planets here suggest what we may experience through partnership and are important in terms of how we respond to other people and what energies we will meet in our relationships.

Venus, the Goddess of Love, shows the style of relationship we enjoy, and our values in partnership. In Sagittarius we love growth and a sense of freedom within our relationships, whereas in Capricorn we may be more focused on commitment and the rules of the partnership.

The Moon shows our emotional needs, and it is vital that these are supported by any relationship we enter in to.

Oppositions in our chart are often played out in our relationships. Being aware of them therefore allows us to realise what we may be projecting onto a partner or trying to live through our partner without meaning to. They may also however show what sorts of people we will be attracted to. For example, with Sun opposite Pluto we will enjoy relationships that allow us to transform our identity, that help us experience the depths of our nature, and which are profound and serious.
