A Brief Guide to the Zodiac Signs: Libra to Pisces

The zodiac signs are an important part of astrology, and well known in popular versions of the Art, forming the basis of many 'horoscope' columns in newspapers and magazines. In this article we briefly consider the fundamental meanings of Libra through to Pisces.

Libra (ruled by Venus)

Libra is the sign of balance as is aptly symbolised by its motif, the scales. It is concerned with fairness and justice. Libra often has a natural diplomacy, a stylishness and grace. It is an air sign and is well able to abstract and appreciate both sides of a debate or argument. Libra is naturally attracted to relationships and social contacts, as it seeks 'the other' in which to find a counterbalance to itself.

Scorpio (ruled by Mars and Pluto)

The Scorpion, symbol of Scorpio, is not a creature to be messed with. If you get too close and it starts to feel threatened, it may sting with unparalleled viciousness. Scorpio is a water sign, one that feels deeply. It is sensitive yet often hides its vulnerability, like Cancer, beneath its hard shell exterior. Scorpio likes nothing more than to get to the bottom of things, to discover secrets and what is underneath the surface. It is a master detective, with a probing, x-ray like vision into your deepest depths.

Sagittarius (ruled by Jupiter)

This is the sign of aiming for the future, just as the archer looks heavenward, his bow and arrow poised to shoot to the stars. Sagittarius is the sign of big dreams and of looking forward to grand adventures and challenges. This sign is concerned with the big picture, with finding the meaning and overall themes in any situation. Sagittarius is a far-sighted sign and can often get bored with the details or the routines of life which aren't grand enough for his visionary streak. He is wonderful however for inspiring you with his ideas and dreams.

Capricorn (ruled by Saturn)

The sign of the mountain goat begins at midwinter, when the Sun is at its lowest point in the sky. This symbolism suggests one of Capricorn's themes, which is journeying on even in the dark, in the bleakness of winter. Capricorn is a sign that keeps going when things are tough, and like its animal, the mountain goat, it climbs higher and higher, surefooted as it conquers the mountain. Capricorn is a serious sign, one attuned to the realities of life, and one able to manage the most difficult of practical situations.

Aquarius (ruled by Saturn and Uranus)

Aquarius, the last of the air signs, is symbolised by the water-bearer, a human figure. Aquarius is associated with humanity in general, and is known for its compassion and egalitarian approach to life. This is the reformer, the progressive and the social activist. Aquarius is a sign of great intellect, with a large capacity to abstract and detach from the emotions of a particular situation. It is the sign of rational appraisal, and possesses a cool logic from which to survey the principles of the task at hand.

Pisces (rules by Jupiter and Neptune)

The last sign of the zodiac, symbolised by the fishes swimming in different directions, is a difficult one to get hold of. It is a chameleon, a paradox, and a culmination of all the signs that have gone before. Pisces is water of the most universal nature, and is associated with the vast seas of the collective unconscious. It is the sign most resonant with escapism and also mysticism. This is a dreamy sign, difficult to catch and pin down.
